Rowan Atkinson was a star even before he became Mr Bean. However, this character did put him on the map. Mr. Bean’s chaotic adventures started in smaller cinemas before they became a real hit with the two films that came out. Despite the unique appearance, Mr. Bean was still a character wrapped in riddles. Where did he come from? What inspired him? What are the facts behind Mr. Bean? Here are at least five things people don’t know about Mr. Bean.
1. Based on a young Rowan Atkinson
The foundation of his character was laid during his studies at Oxford University. He actually wanted to become an electrical engineer. Before that, he was also working on his Master’s degree. However, when he wanted to do a sketch in a local theatre, he started practicing in front of the mirror. It was here that the foundations were laid for the later Mr. Bean.
2. Richard Curtis discovered him
Richard Curtis also studied at Oxford University. When he met Rowan Atkinson, this led to a number of great collaborations at various English shows. When Mr. Bean also started to play as a sitcom, Richard Curtis became co-writer of the sketches.

3. He was inspired by a French genius
Bean’s specialty is, of course, the physical comedy it brings with it. However, he owes a lot to a French genius. The inertia and charisma of the character Jacques Tati played, made a great impression on him. The idea of only expressing himself visually, instead of verbally was born here.
4. Atkinson’s way of working is unconventional
Although he started practicing in front of the mirror at Oxford University, he doesn’t now. In an interview with BBC World Service, he said he hoped his face would do what he thought it would.
The end result of his shows and sketches often seems very simple, but Rowan Atkinson puts a lot of time into thinking up and preparing the sketches. Although his audience wants to see comedy, he takes his work very seriously.

5. There are very few original pieces by Mr. Bean
There are few original pieces of Mr Bean available. In total, there are only 14 pieces available that are original by Mr. Bean. Still, he thinks this is enough. He wonders aloud if Mr. Bean will ever come back. “There comes a time when you’ve done everything you’ve wanted to do,” Rowan Atkinson said.
