This married couple, Willie and D.W. Williams from North Carolina, recently celebrated their 82-year wedding anniversary. 82 years of love, joy and laughter. DW has reached the respectable age of 103 and his wife follows him closely with her 100 years. In addition to their wedding anniversary, they also celebrated their birthdays that fall, one week before. This triple milestone was specially dressed up with a big party at the First Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church in the American city of Charlotte, according to WSOC TV. Their granddaughter, Williams-Greene, told the channel: “How wonderful it is to see them still so fit at this age. It’s a blessing that we still have them here.” She also indicated that the two are each other’s best friends.
Taxi rides still cost 10 cents
The couple remembered that they first met each other when taxi rides still cost 10 cents. A lot has changed throughout their marriage of over 80 years, but their love for each other is still as strong as ever. Their marriage has gone through many historic moments of the United States, including the Second World War, Vietnam War, the era of ‘Civil Rights’ and also 9/11. But they are extremely happy to have had each other in these challenging times. When asked about the secret of their marriage, the unanimous answer was, “Above all, be nice to each other.”
A feast of love
When their granddaughter organized the party for them, the local news quickly caught on. Williams-Greene says her grandparents are a living example of long, healthy and loving relationships. She also notes that this is because of their “communication, love for each other and the way they work together.”
When they got married, Willie was only 18 and DW was about 21. They spent most of their lives together and you can imagine what memories those two have built up together! When asked what they would do if they had another 100 years of marriage ahead of them, they said, “I don’t know, sitting in the front of the house.”
Be kind to each other
This beautiful story of loyalty and lasting love is an example for younger generations. Their advice to be kind to each other is abundantly clear, although it is something that is not put into practice as often as it should be. Yet we can see that it is advice that has worked for them all these years. They also indicate faith in God as the basis for a lasting marriage. Actually, every Sunday they sit in the front row in church.
The foundation for their loving and healthy relationship, together with love and respect for each other, has given the couple a wonderful life in the midst of a loving family that supports them. We can all learn from those who set an example in how to take time to act lovingly. Because later, you reap the benefits of a peaceful life filled with family and friends.
